The San Francisco 49ers selected DE Cam Johnson out of Virginia with the 237th overall pick (7th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Johnson is 6’3″, 267 pounds and he runs a 4.8 40. Johnson doesn’t always go all out and that is likely why he slid so far in the draft. But, no one can deny his upside, because he likes to make plays in opposing backfields. Johnson played in 12 games (all starts) for Virginia last year and he had 30 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, 1 batted ball, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. Johnson played in 42 games (40 starts) in his four years at Virginia and he had 130 tackles, 32.5 tackles for a loss, 12.5 sacks, 1 batted ball, 3 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. This was a good pick for the 49ers as Johnson has a huge upside. It will be interesting to see if the coaches can keep the fire lit inside Johnson.

The San Francisco 49ers selected free safety Trent Robinson out of Michigan State with the 180th overall pick (6th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Robinson is on the small side at 5’9″, 193 pounds and he runs a 4.45 40. Robinson is an outstanding athlete and he’s a playmaker when the ball is in the air……but I’m not so sure he can handle being the last 49er between a WR and the goal line. He might project better as a CB in the pros because of that. Robinson is a special teams ace, so he’s going to get on the field in 2012 for the Niners. Robinson played in 14 games (13 starts) for Michigan State last year and he had 80 tackles, 2 passes broken up and 4 interceptions. He played in 46 games (32 starts) in his four years with the Spartans and he has 229 tackles, 12 passes broken up and 9 interceptions. This was a solid pick at this point in the draft for the 49ers.

The 49ers selected RB LaMichael James out of Oregon with the 61st overall pick (2nd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. LaMichael James is on the small side at 5’8″, 190 pounds but he runs a 4.45 40. Coach Jim Harbaugh likely had a big hand in this pick as he saw first hand what James could do in college. James has great moves and home run speed, but he’s likely going to get knocked around a bit in the NFL. I think that Harbaugh has a Darren Sproles like role in might for James, and he could excel being used that way. James played in 12 games (all starts) for Oregon last year and he carried the ball 247 times for 1,805 yards (7.3 ypc) with 18 TD runs. He also caught 17 passes for 270 yards (12.4 avg) with 1 TD grab for the Ducks. James played in 37 games (35 starts) in his three years with the Ducks and he carried the ball 771 times for 5,082 yards (6.6 ypc) with 53 TD runs. He also caught 51 passes for 586 yards (11.5 avg) with 4 TD grabs in his college career. James will team up with Frank Gore and Brandon Jacobs to give the Niners a trio out rock solid RBs with different strengths. I really like this pick for the 49ers.
