The San Francisco 49ers sign CB Keith Smith

The 49ers have signed 29-year old CB Keith Smith.  Smith played in 10 games for the Lions last season and he had 16 tackles and he forced 2 fumbles.  He has now played in 71 games in his NFL career and he has made 146 tackles, defensed 13 passes, has 1 sack, forced 3 fumbles and he intercepted 4 passes (1 returned for a TD).  Smith will provide needed depth due to the injury to Nate Clements.  WR Michael Spurlock was released to make room for Smith on the roster.  He played in 4 games for the Niners this season and he carried the ball 1 time for 3 yards.  He also threw 1 incomplete pass and he made 2 tackles.  The Niners shouldn’t miss Spurlock too much if at all the rest of the season.

The San Francisco 49ers lose DE Demetric Evans for a while

The San Francisco 49ers have lost 30-year old DE Demetric Evans for the next three weeks due to a sprained shoulder.  Evans has played in 7 games this season and he has made 4 tackles.  The 49ers shouldn’t miss him too much while he is out of action.

The San Francisco 49ers lose LT Joe Staley for a while

The San Francisco 49ers will be without starting left tackle for the next six weeks due to a sprained PCL and MCL in his right knee.  Staley has started all 7 games for the Niners this season so Alex Smith better have eyes in the back of his head when he drops back to throw the ball.  Barry Sims will replace Staley in the starting lineup.  He has played in all 7 games for the Niners this season but he hasn’t started any games.

The San Francisco 49ers lose Nate Clements

The San Francisco 49ers will be without 29-year old cornerback Nate Clements for quite a while and maybe the rest of the year due to a fractured shoulder blade.  Clements had just lost his starting job recently but he was going to still be counted on as the nickel back.  He has played in 7 games this season for the Niners and he has 35 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, he has defensed 7 passes and he has 1 interception.  Clements has also returned 4 punts for 38 yards (9.5 avg) this season.  This injury will hurt the Niners as Clements was likely going to get his starting job back at some point in 2009.

The Niners gave the Colts all they could handle in this game.  I think they might have been able to win the game if they ran the ball just a little bit more.  Alex Smith had a solid game for the Niners in his first start of the season yesterday as he completed 19 of 32 passes for 198 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception.  He also had 1 carry for 10 yards.  Frank Gore was outstanding for the Niners in this game as he carried the ball 13 times for 91 yards (7.0 ypc) with a TD and he also caught 5 passes for 43 yards (8.6 avg).  Michael Crabtree led the way in the passing game for the 49ers yesterday with 6 catches for 81 yards (13.5 avg) but he lost a fumble.  Isaac Bruce pitched in with 4 grabs for 51 yards (12.8 avg) yesterday.  Vernon Davis only caught 3 passes for 20 yards (6.7 avg) but one of his grabs went for a TD.  The 49ers finished up with 295 total yards in this game (113 rushing, 182 passing).

Safety Dashon Goldson led the way for the Niners in this game with 10 tackles.  CB Shawntee Spencer, LB Patrick Willis and LB Takeo Spikes led the way with 8 tackles each in this game.  The Colts finished up with 410 total yards (61 rushing, 349 passing) in this game.  The Niners are now 3-4 on the season.
