The San Francisco 49ers might have to look in a different direction at QB for the 2008 season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Niners Chat by admin on Wednesday 28 November 2007 at 9:16 pm

The 49ers had hoped that Alex Smith would build off his promising season of 2006 with improvement in 2007.  But he was injured early in the season and he never recovered.  Was his injury the cause of his poor play or is he just not any good?  We will likely see soon.  Smith completed 94 of 193 passes (48.7%) for 914 yards with 2 TD passes and 4 interceptions (57.2 QB Rating).  Trent Dilfer will be the starter the rest of the season as long as he can stay healthy and he needs to play well if he wants the 49ers to keep him around.  He was solid last week and he will likely have to continue to play like that or he will wind up in a different uniform next season.  Dilfer has completed 91 of 172 (53.8%) passes for 950 yards with 5 TD passes and 7 interceptions (62.8 QB Rating) so far this season.

San Francisco 49ers 37, Arizona Cardinals 31 in OT

The 49ers played a good all-around game and they deserved the win.  Tully Banta-Cain recovered a Kurt Warner fumble in the end zone to win this game in OT.  Trent Dilfer had a good game as he completed 25 of 39 passes for 256 yards with 2 TDs and 0 interceptions.  Frank Gore was unstoppable as he carried the ball 21 times for 116 yards (5.5 ypc) with 2 TD runs and he also caught 11 passes for 98 yards (8.9 avg).  Arnaz Battle only caught 1 pass….but it was a 57-yard TD!  Vernon Davis (6 rec, 45 yards, TD) and Darrell Jackson (5 rec, 43 yards).  The 49ers finished up with 137 yards rushing on 25 carries (5.5 ypc) and they also completed 25 of 39 passes for 237 yards.

The 49ers defense gave up a lot of yards but they made big plays when they had to.  Patrick Willis was a monster with 18 tackles and 1/2 a sack.  DBs Michael Lewis (12 tackles, sack), Nate Clements (10 tackles) and Walt Harris (3 tackles, 2 interceptions) all had solid games against the Cardinals.  The Cardinals finished up with 96 yards rushing on 24 carries (4.0 ypc) and they also completed 35 of 49 passes for 456 yards.

It’s official…..the 49ers really suck bad!  Trent Dilfer started this game but he didn’t play any better than Alex Smith would of….and that’s saying something.  Dilfer completed 20 of 42 passes for 231 yards with 2 interceptions.  Frank Gore had a sub-par game with 15 carries for 32 yards (2.1 ypc) and he also caught 5 passes for 31 yards (6.2 avg).  Arnaz Battle led all receivers on the 49ers with 6 grabs for 86 yards (14.3 avg) and TE Vernon Davis pitched in with 4 catches for 50 yards (12.5 avg).  The 49ers finished up with only 32 yards rushing on 16 carries (2.0 ypc) and they also completed 20 of 42 passes for 212 yards.

The defense of the Niners was led by the line as Marques Douglas (10 tackles, 1/2 a sack) and Bryant Young (4 tackles, 2.5 sacks).  The Rams finished up with 102 yards rushing on 29 carries (3.5 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 32 passes for 105 yards.

Seattle Seahawks 24, San Francisco 49ers 0

It’s official…..the 49ers suck.  They lost their 7th game in a row last night and couldn’t even muster a single field goal!  Alex Smith looked lost as usual as he only completed 12 of 28 passes for 114 yards and he lost two fumbles.  Frank Gore had a good game running the ball but the Niners got behind too many points to use him.  Gore carried the ball 13 times for 72 yards (5.5 ypc).  Arnaz Battle had one of his better games with 4 catches for 78 yards (19.5 avg).  The 49ers finished up with 79 yards rushing on 16 carries (4.9 ypc) and they also completed 12 of 28 passes for 94 yards.

The defense was led by linebacker Jeff Ulbrich (10 tackles) and safety Michael Lewis (10 tackles).  The Seahawks finished up with 106 yards rushing on 36 carries (2.9 ypc) and they also completed 27 of 40 passes for 274 yards.

San Francisco 49ers rookie linebacker Patrick Willis has a broken hand

Rookie linebacker Patrick Willis will wear a cast on his broken hand and keep rolling along for the Niners defense.  Willis is leading the NFL with 83 tackles so far this season and he also has 1 sack and a fumble recovery.  Willis is the leader on the defense as he’s playing at a Pro Bowl level.

The San Francisco 49ers lose two starters on the offensive line for the season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking Niner News,Front Page,General Niners Chat,Injury Reports by admin on Wednesday 7 November 2007 at 1:23 am

Left offensive tackle Jonas Jennings and right guard Justin Smiley will miss the remainder of the season due to injury.  The loss of Jennings will hurt as Alex Smith’s blindside will now be protected by Adam Snyder who has struggled so far this season when he’s gotten to play.  Right guard Justin Smiley has a separated shoulder and he will miss the rest of the season because he will require surgery to repair it.  He will likely be replaced by David Baas.  The 49ers offense has been horrible so far this season without having injuries on the offensive line.

Atlanta Falcons 20, San Francisco 49ers 16

The 49ers stunk it up again against the Falcons on Sunday.  Alex Smith was the main culprit as he completed 17 of 38 passes for 149 yards with three interceptions and a lost fumble.  Frank Gore didn’t play in this game due to a bum ankle so Maurice Hicks and Michael Robinson handled the running game.  Hicks carried the ball 7 times for 49 yards (7.0 ypc) with a TD run.  Robinson did the heavier lifting with 17 carries for 67 yards (3.9 ypc).  Vernon Davis (7 rec, 77 yards) and Arnaz Battle (4 rec, 35 yards) led the way in the passing game for the Niners.  The Niners finished with 116 yards rushing on 24 carries (4.8 ypc) and they also completed 17 of 38 passes for 135 yards.

The defense was led by linebacker Patrick Willis who had 10 tackles and a sack.  The Falcons finished up with 155 yards rushing on 39 carries (4.0 ypc) and they also completed 14 of 25 passes for 131 yards.

New Orleans Saints 31, San Francisco 49ers 10

The 49ers got absolutely thrashed by the Saints last weekend.  Alex Smith returned but he didn’t play that well.  Smith completed 22 of 43 passes for 190 yards with 1 TD and 0 INTs.  Frank Gore carried the ball 12 times for 41 yards (3.4 ypc) as he was pretty much taken out of the game because of how quick the Saints jumped on the Niners.  Vernon Davis was one 49er that had a decent game as he caught 6 passes for 71 yards (11.8 avg) with a TD grab.

LBs Patrick Willis (10 tackles) and Derek Smith (9 tackles) led the way for the 49ers defense.  The Saints finished up with 102 yards rushing on 27 carries (3.8 ypc) and they completed 31 of 39 passes for 336 yards.
