The 49ers cleared themselves of a bad QB sending Cody Pickett to the Houston Texans for a conditional draft pick. It is believed that they will only receive a pick if Pickett makes the final roster, so don’t hold your breath.

As a rookie Alex Smith looked like a deer in headlights, but the 49ers didn’t really have an alternative after throwing Smith to the wolves. With the trade for Trent Dilfer, things have changed. Smith better start showing some ability or he’ll be holding a clipboard this season. Smith played in nine games (7 starts) and completed 50.9% of his passes for 875 yards. Smith only threw one touchdown pass and a WHOPPING 11 interceptions for a QB rating of 40.8. You don’t even have to complete a pass to get a 39.3, that’s how bad Smith was. QBs that run shotgun offenses in college usually don’t succeed in the NFL, but only time will tell.

Trent Dilfer was brought on board from the Cleveland Browns. Dilfer was the starting QB for the first 11 games before injuring himself, but he didn’t like the idea of not competing for the starting job on the Browns, so he was traded to the 49ers. Will Dilfer be a boy scout and sit behind Alex Smith? Only time will tell. Dilfer is a great game manager that won a Super Bowl as the starting QB for the Ravens, but on that team all he had to do was hand off to Jamal Lewis and get out of his way. Dilfer has played in 123 games (107 starts) and completed 55.7% of his passes for 19,352 yards with 106 TD passes and 117 interceptions for a 71.3 career rating.

Jesse Palmer whose only claim to fame was being on the show “The Bachelor” will compete for the #3 job on the Niners. He has only appeared in 8 games (3 starts) and completed 52.5% of his passes for 562 yards with 3 TD and 4 INT for a career rating of 59.8.

Cody Pickett will battle Palmer for the #3 spot. He appeared in six games for the Niners (2 starts) and has only completed 40.0% of his passes for 195 yards with no TD passes and 4 interceptions for a robust QB rating of 16.4.
